For many Ukrainians, February 24th, 2025, began with a reflection on what they were doing at that very time three years ago. I, like millions of Ukrainians, clearly remember that morning exactly three years ago. Our lives have changed forever.
Thinking about the horrors I relived, and those that are still being endured today, I arrive to the Westminster station. In the blue skies above the Houses or Parliament, a Ukrainian flag was gently fluttering in the wind right next to the British flag. My eyes filled with tears, and my heart overflowed with gratitude.
It was a great honour for members of the Hilltops Ukrainian Support Community to be invited to the House of Lords and 10 Downing Street to commemorate the third anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. As a group, we had a privilege of meeting the Prime Minister. I was deeply touched by his genuine concern, not only for the future of Ukraine as a nation, but also for Ukrainians as individuals. Sir Keir Starmer began his address by saying ‘welcome to my home.’ This phrase perfectly encapsulated how welcomed we felt in the UK. This country has not only provided us with shelter, but it has also given our children a chance to learn, and, most importantly, hope for the future. After all, if people can open their homes to strangers, there is still hope for a better world and a brighter future. Several members of our group also had the opportunity for a private discussion with Sir Keir, where they shared their difficulties and concerns. Sir Keir Starmer reaffirmed his commitment to support Ukraine during this difficult time and to work towards lasting peace and security for the Ukrainian people.
It was remarkable to witness the talent of the Ukrainian people. For example, the music performed by Yuriy Soroka, a brilliant violinist, created a very warm atmosphere at the event. A vocal performance by Olga Terletska, featuring a traditional song about a kozak dying for his country, brought tears to the eyes of attendees. It was also a pleasure to meet Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK, at Downing Street. His cordial approach, as he listened to individual concerns, drew people to him.
It was a privilege to visit Downing Street and to express, once more, how much Ukrainians appreciate the support, kindness, understanding, and hospitality they have experienced in the UK. It is invaluable to the future of Ukraine to have opportunities for its people to be heard. The visit to Downing Street illuminated this very difficult day with a ray of hope for a peaceful and prosperous future.
Our deepest gratitude to the United Kingdom, and glory to Ukraine!
