Recently, 8th March 2026, our Hilltops Ukrainian Support community have had a chance to participate in the

event named “ Breaking bread “. That was a great opportunity for us to learn about the bread

related traditions in many cultures and religions, and also, represent the Ukrainians ones.

We met kindhearted and generous people who presented different communities living in the

Hilltop area.

During the event the hosts, guests and visitors savoured delicious bread made with love by

the fantastic people who were happy not just to serve the bread products, but to tell stories

about the meaning of bread in their culture and cuisine. The Ukrainians tasted the Jewish

challah( braided bread), Chinese, Pakistanis, Turkish, Lithuanian samples of bread.

The Ukrainian women generously treated the visitors with homemade bread, garlic harshly,

poppy seed palyanitsa. The highlight of the table was Каravai. The people praised the food,

were curious about the bread products, the recipes and symbolism of the bread at different

celebrations and ceremonies. It was interesting for them to learn how rich the Ukrainian

cuisine is with deep roots for delicious food. And, bread is basic food, as it is “ staff of life “.

The Ukrainians are never full if they don’t eat bread.

The festive event was over, but everyone was full of bright emotions and impressions. We

enriched ourselves with the knowledge about the meaning of bread for different

communities. The Breaking Bread was attended by honourable guests who were pleased

to be a part of the celebration. There was one more very important thing that happened at

the event, we did the raffle and raised the money to support the local charity. Because

Breaking Bread is about mutual care, strengthening relationships, making peace,

welcoming someone home.
